What is a Smart Home?
Smart Home technology is used to make all electronic devices around a house act "smart" or automated. Nearly all major appliances in the near future will take advantage of this technology. Smart Home technology is a way for ordinary electronics and appliances to communicate with each other, consumers, and even manufacturers. At this year's Consumer Electronics Show, many companies unveiled appliances which could be scanned with smart phones to diagnose problems, check the status of components and even call service centers if repair was needed.
What is Home Automation?
Home automation enables you to control much of your home in any easy and efficient way.
Below are examples of functions you could do with a Home Automation System:
Lock / Unlock Doors
Control Audio Systems
Arm or Disarm
Control All TV's
Many consider a smart home to be one that is networked. Others feel it is a home that has appliances that will allow the consumer to do little to no work, but a smart home really is all of that combined, and more. Not only will all consumer products be networked, but they will also make life easier. Smart home technology is currently being developed and implemented for all rooms in the house, in particular the kitchen and the living room.
Imagine with just a single touch the lights dim, the shades close, the plasma TV turns on and your favorite movie begins. All you need is the popcorn and soda. Imagine your window treatments are programmed to adjust at pre-set times to reduce glare and protect delicate fabrics and fine art from harmful direct sunlight. Imagine at night the hallway lights automatically illuminate as you walk by.
A Smart Home eliminates the need to walk from room to room to adjust drapes, lights, temperature, and audio/video components. Whether from an easy-to-use color touch panel, remote or a customized keypad, a smartphone or tablet computer, total control is always at your fingertips.
What does a Smart Home do?
Lighting Lighting sets the perfect scene and creates the desired ambience for any occasion. Whether it's movie night, an intimate dinner for two, a business party or a quiet Sunday brunch reading the newspaper, lighting establishes the right mood. Traveling out of town or working late? The lights can execute pre-programmed scenes to simulate established lifestyle patterns. Dimmers can adjust internal lighting according to natural light levels in the home or incrementally over a pre-determined time period.
Monitor the front door or gate; watch the kids by the swimming pool; or check on the baby napping in the nursery. You can control security cameras and watch what's going on around the house right from your touch panel. While listening to your favorite music or watching a DVD in the home theater, you'll know the instant someone rings the doorbell or enters the driveway as the audio is gently muted, the camera picture appears on the touch panel or television, and you're able to speak with the visitor and grant access to your home with just the press of a button.
Temperature Keep your home comfortable at all times monitoring temperature and humidity levels automatically. No need to get up or even be home to adjust climate controls, with Lavitech, you can control multiple zones from one location and easily pre-set temperature set points. Keep your home at a more energy efficient temperature while you're out, and programmed to automatically adjust to more comfortable levels by the time you get home. Getting home early? Use your PDA or PC to control the HVAC remotely, even monitor the wine cellar or greenhouse atrium temperatures.
The power supply to all appliances in the home could be controlled using the smart system. In a large home this would be a very convenient feature because there may be a lot of electrical appliances that are left on standby, hence the system should contain a feature, which searches all power supply links in the home to determine where energy can be saved.
Create the ultimate Home Theatre. With a single touch of the controller the lights dim, the shades close, the screen opens, the temperature adjusts, the AV components turn on, the inputs are selected, the volume is set and the DVD player starts your movie. For modern movie lovers, nothing stirs the soul like the impact of an earth shaking sound effect or the enveloping warmth of a lushly orchestrated soundtrack and Lavitech offers unlimited possibilities for adding an optional dynamic surround sound experience.
It is worth having an option to verify the current status of the system. This kind of feature would provide the user with the ability to scan the entire system or just parts of it for errors.
When a vehicle approaches the driveway of a home, the system should be able to alert the homeowner. This is only possible if certain types of smart home technologies are used. It would work very well with a Bluetooth headset because the system announce the arrival of the visitor to the homeowner. It would also work well with more long-range wireless standards, such as, GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) because the homeowner could receive an SMS (Short Message Service) when someone arrives at the home, which is especially useful when away from the home.
A home-based system should be able to initiate with a mobile-phone when the house is empty. The system should provide the ability for the user to enter the name and model number of the phone so it can be verified for use. The user will be able to communicate with the system when approaching home to switch the television or the oven on and any other electrical appliances the house owner may wish to make use of.
A useful feature in a home-based smart system would be alarm clock functionality, for example, the user would be able to choose from a selection of wake up sounds from more pleasant sounds to more piercing types. At the weekend the more pleasant ones are likely to be selected.
